Patio Cover Permits: When You Need One and When You Don’t (San Jose)
Does a patio cover need a permit in San Jose? How the small-structure exemption works, what the building code requires, and how to check…
Decks & balconies · Completed project
A tired backyard rebuilt as one outdoor room: a raised deck with wide stairs and black metal railings, a paver patio, a flagstone path and new planting.
Project overview
This backyard project tied a new deck, paving and planting together. A raised deck off the house steps down to the yard with wide stairs and black metal railings.
Below the deck, a paver patio and flagstone stepping-stone path connect the seating areas, with gravel and planting beds around them.
New planting, including Japanese maples and shrubs, frames the space and softens the fence line.
Room for dining and lounging right off the house.
Broad steps double as extra seating.
Pavers and flagstone connect every part of the yard.
Japanese maples and shrubs around the edges.

How we work
The same five steps run every Quartz job, from the first visit to the final walkthrough. One team designs, permits and builds it.
We check the existing deck or yard, grade, access and how the deck connects to the house.
Size, height, stairs, railings and decking material are chosen.
Where the city requires one, we handle the deck permit.
Footings, posts, beams and joists are set level and secured.
Boards, stairs and railings are installed and finished, then we walk the deck with you.

We wanted a lovely deck, and Ohad built it for us. The work is excellent, and the design complements our house. His team arrived on time, acted professionally, and cleaned everything before leaving. We were happy with the whole experience.
I got my front yard, back yard and deck work done by Ohad and his team. They did excellent work. They are very professional, delivered project in time and are very flexible too. I'll hire them anytime for my future projects.
