Quick Answer: A load-bearing wall supports the weight of the structure above it — the floor, roof, or ceiling joists bear down onto it. Non-load-bearing (partition) walls only divide space. The simplest indicator: walls that run perpendicular to floor joists, sit above a beam or support post in the basement, and align with walls directly below them on lower floors are almost always load-bearing. Direction relative to joists: Go into the attic or basement. If floor joists run parallel to the wall, the wall is likely non-bearing. If joists are perpendicular (land on the wall from both sides), the wall is likely load-bearing
Location in the floor plan: Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing. Interior walls that run down the center of the house (parallel to the roof ridge) are almost always load-bearing
What’s above: If there’s a second floor, another wall, or roof directly above a first-floor wall, that wall is very likely load-bearing
What’s below: If the wall sits directly above a beam or concrete footing in the basement or crawl space, it is load-bearing
Wall thickness: Load-bearing walls are sometimes (not always) thicker — 2×6 framing vs. 2×4 on partition walls

Why It Matters: Consequences of Removing a Load-Bearing Wall

If a load-bearing wall is removed without installing an adequate replacement beam (header) and posts to carry the load, you risk: sagging ceilings, cracked drywall, doors and windows that stick or no longer open, floors that bounce or sag — and in extreme cases, partial or total collapse. This is not a DIY project.
