Engineered Quartz: Best for Most Kitchens
Engineered quartz (Silestone, Caesarstone, Cambria, MSI) is made of 90–95% ground quartz crystals bound with resin. Unlike natural stone, it’s completely non-porous — no sealing needed, ever. It resists staining from coffee, wine, and oils that would damage marble. Colors are highly consistent, making it easy to match cabinets. The only limitation: it can be damaged by heat (always use trivets) and is not appropriate outdoors (UV fades the resin).
Granite: Best Natural Stone Value
Granite is a fully natural igneous rock with unique veining that makes each slab one-of-a-kind. It’s harder than quartz and completely heat-resistant. The tradeoff: it’s porous and requires annual sealing to prevent staining. High-end granites (Blue Bahia, Fantasy Brown, Taj Mahal) approach quartzite in aesthetics. Budget granites (Ubatuba, Tan Brown) offer excellent value.
Quartzite: Premium Natural Stone
Quartzite is a metamorphic rock (not to be confused with engineered quartz). Marble: Beautiful but High-Maintenance
Marble (Calacatta, Carrara, Statuario) is the most beautiful countertop material — but also the most demanding. It etches easily from acidic substances (lemon juice, coffee, wine) and stains without constant sealing. We recommend marble only for baking stations or low-traffic areas, and only for homeowners committed to high maintenance. Porcelain slabs can mimic marble’s look without the drawbacks.
